Whether you’re curvy, petite, tall, or somewhere in between, at Bridal Atelier Montclair we want to celebrate your one-of-a-kind beauty! Your wedding dress search is one of the most exciting parts of planning your wedding, but we understand that it can be a little nerve-wracking, especially in the beginning. The right mindset, an open heart, and a little self-compassion, are key to making your wedding dress shopping experience stress free & fun. To help prepare you for your appointment, we here at Bridal Atelier Montclair have put together a guide to staying body positive while wedding dress shopping!
Preparation is key
Before you walk in to your appointment, you should make sure you’ve taken care of any steps that will help create a sense of calm, and make you feel like your best self. If this means styling your hair and putting on a touch of makeup similar to your wedding day look, by all means, go for it! Wearing non-obtrusive, seamless underwear matched to your complexion will also go miles in helping the wedding dresses look their best on your figure. A strapless bra, adhesive bra, or nipple concealers are also a great idea. You don’t want to be distracted by bra straps. If you’re planning on wearing heels as you walk down the aisle, bring a pair with you that are easy to take on and off when trying on gowns to get a feel for how the gown will look in heels. Additionally, do a little research on what bridal silhouettes you like, and that you think will flatter your body type. Having some ideas going into your appointment can help alleviate a lot of stress. If you’re not certain, ask our bridal consultants on their thoughts. They're always there to help and have tons of experience dressing and styling brides.
Set Realistic Goals
It’s important not to put too much pressure on yourself during the first appointment, and coming in with unrealistic expectations can lead to disappointment. We all have been bombarded with that “yes” feeling on television, but depending on your personality, finding your dream wedding dress might take more time. Don’t despair if you need time to ruminate on your decision - take a breath, and listen to your heart.
It’s important to note that you shouldn’t play the numbers game while searching for your wedding dress. Each designer will have their own way of sizing bridal gowns, so your bridal size will not necessarily match your regular size. Additionally, it’s normal to opt for a size larger when actually purchasing your dream wedding dress, as it is much easier to take in extra fabric than to let it out during the alterations process.
Having a little mantra that gets you in the right headspace is a great way to stay in good spirits while embarking on your wedding dress journey. Try repeating a word or phrase to yourself in the mirror that makes you feel grounded and present with yourself. A little mindfulness goes a long way! Especially if you have a tendency to have a not-so-sunny attitude when faced with a fitting room, saying a little line of positive affirmation can change a negative attitude to a positive one. It might sound a little silly at first, but being kind to yourself and remembering that YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL is so important. We really can’t say it often enough.
